Matisyahu’s 8^th studio record Ancient Child, out on October 3, 2025, is a reconnection with roots, a collaboration with family, and a continued search for meaning in a world of madness. Over the last 20 years the multifarious musician has been creating an artful salmagundi of consciousness focused song that pulls from a collective of influences that includes but is not limited to rap, rock, dancehall, and dub.

On Ancient Child, Matisyahu has developed a record devoid of descriptors as the storytelling takes center stage. The sonic constructions that support his inventive songwriting takes their form around his exploration spiritual and personal narratives.

The twelve-song collection straddles the contemporary and the futuristic while looking back at Matisyahu’s religious foundations and growth as a father and human. Free flowing roots, rock, reggae and creative verbal assonance are hallmarks of the record.

Admittedly, this album lies somewhat outside the rock room’s general vicinity and usual listening zone. The creativity in the arrangements and specialized rhythmic recitations equate to an original record that looks at itself honestly and can’t help but pass that feeling on to the listener. Any implied redundance is quickly dispersed through the unsettled and specialized rhythms.

“Son Come Up,” is a track of note and the reverberant new single from the record featuring Matisyahu’s oldest son LAIVY, who contributes his abilities to the hard Afro-beat that rises through musical mists to meet the generational content head on.

Matisyahu’s lyrical expressions are fused by his reduplicative rhythmic decisions framing both his lyricism and smooth melodics in thematic consonance.

Ranging from the “G Funk” inspired “Anxiety,” to the loopy soundscapes of “Sound Foundation,” these are songs with serious themes and confident expressionism dressed in sonic dissonance. The ragga sound of Kingston’s dancehalls permeates the album from its rhyme schemes to its jittery grooves.

“Crosswinds,” encapsulates the diversity of the record with stringy acoustic guitars stitched to the beat while both “Find a Way,” and “Ritual,” emit a silver bell purity through samples and steel drums.

Every track is a specialized movement and a moment centered around a constantly shifting aural image. “Wake Up,” is alive with swollen strings and the closing “Rockin Tempos,” is the second song to feature Matisyahu’s second eldest son Duvbear, and is just as its named, a big chorused 4/4 rock influenced piece.

From the street to the island and the club to the altar, Ancient Child crosses borders and unites beliefs lyrically, aesthetically and thematically. It’s fearlessness in song and honesty in art elevates it beyond genre and classification to a celebration of social awareness and personal peace.
